Health risks of self-medication and drug misuse

The practice of self-medicating with over-the-counter analgesics and anti-inflammatories poses significant health risks. While these drugs provide immediate relief for symptoms like headaches or stomach discomfort, they can mask underlying complex pathologies that require professional clinical diagnosis.

Frequent misuse can lead to severe physiological consequences. The liver and kidneys are particularly vulnerable to accelerated wear, which may result in chronic organ failure. Additionally, certain analgesics can irritate the gastric mucosa, potentially causing severe gastritis or bleeding ulcers.

Other critical risks include the development of antibiotic resistance when medications are taken without supervision or when prescribed courses are not completed. Furthermore, chronic self-medication can foster both psychological dependence and physical tolerance to substances.
