Health risks rise with wellness trends in Mexico and Argentina

Health experts are raising concerns regarding the rising popularity of wellness trends such as intravenous vitamin therapy and high-energy drink consumption in Latin America.

In Mexico, specialist Dr. Alejandro Macías has warned that vitaminized IV drips, often marketed to boost energy or combat fatigue, lack proven medical benefits. He noted that the perceived improvements are likely due to a placebo effect rather than the substances themselves. Furthermore, he highlighted significant health risks, including potential contamination of the solutions or equipment during administration.

In Argentina, the consumption of energy drinks is seeing significant growth, with the market generating between 503 and 516 million dollars for the 2024-2025 period. According to the Hospital Italiano, a single can of an energy drink can be equivalent to consuming three or four cups of coffee. The World Health Organization has previously called on governments to increase taxes on such products to mitigate health risks associated with high doses of caffeine and sugar.
