Public health challenges in Latin America

Overview

Latin America is facing diverse public health challenges, ranging from infectious disease outbreaks to concerns over modern wellness trends.

Infectious disease concerns include a measles outbreak in Peru’s Loreto region, which has resulted in one death and 57 cases, alongside a dengue outbreak in Lambayeque with over 4,300 cases and 14 deaths. Additionally, Bolivia has reported a rise in HIV cases in Cochabamba, with adolescents accounting for 14% of reported instances.

Separately, health experts are warning against certain wellness practices. In Mexico, specialists have cautioned that intravenous vitamin therapy lacks proven medical benefits and carries risks of contamination. In Argentina, the rapid growth of the energy drink market has raised concerns regarding high caffeine and sugar consumption, prompting calls for increased taxation to mitigate health risks.
