Health specialists urge STI testing even in monogamous relationships

Medical specialists emphasize that regular testing for sexually transmitted infections (STIs) is essential, even within stable, monogamous relationships. Infectious disease specialist Sheila Paiva notes that being in a closed relationship does not eliminate the risk of STIs, as some infections can remain in the body without symptoms.

Experts highlight that certain viruses, including HPV, HIV, and herpes, can remain inactive for months or even years. Consequently, an infection could manifest long after a relationship has begun if the partners were not previously tested.

Recommended preventative measures include testing for HIV, syphilis, hepatitis B and C, gonorrhea, and chlamydia. Experts also recommend the use of condoms and HPV vaccination. Maintaining open communication regarding symptoms such as sores or unusual discharge is critical, and if an infection is diagnosed, both partners must undergo treatment to prevent reinfection.
