Medical guidance on STI and HIV testing awareness

Medical specialists are emphasizing the importance of regular sexually transmitted infection (STI) testing and addressing specific gaps in diagnostic awareness.

Initially, experts highlighted that even individuals in monogamous relationships should undergo regular testing. Infectious disease specialist Sheila Paiva noted that certain viruses, such as HPV, HIV, and herpes, can remain inactive for long periods, meaning infections may manifest long after a relationship has started. Recommended preventative measures include testing for syphilis, hepatitis, gonorrhea, and chlamydia, alongside vaccination and open communication between partners.

More recently, medical professionals in Austria have called for increased HIV testing awareness specifically for women. Experts, including Dr. Katharina Grabmeier-Pfistershammer and Andrea Brunner, observed that women are often diagnosed much later than other high-risk groups because healthcare providers may not proactively suggest testing as frequently as they do for men who have sex with men or people who use drugs. While pregnancy screenings detect about one-quarter of HIV-positive women before symptoms appear, those not in a reproductive phase face lower testing probabilities. Efforts to improve outreach include working with community and religious leaders to combat social stigma and provide multilingual information.
