Healthcare advancements and rehabilitation programs in Poland

In Poland, the Social Insurance Institution (ZUS) is utilizing pension prevention programs to help individuals with health issues, such as spinal or heart problems, return to the workforce through free medical rehabilitation. The program, which is celebrating its 30th anniversary, has benefited nearly 1.8 million people. As of April 2026, physiotherapists employed by ZUS are also authorized to issue decisions regarding the need for rehabilitation.

Simultaneously, advancements in treating Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) are transforming patient care in Poland. With approximately 3,000 patients nationwide, the introduction of targeted therapies like Tofersen—which addresses the SOD1 gene mutation—has shifted the medical focus from symptom management to addressing the underlying cause of the disease. This has led to an increased emphasis on genetic diagnostics to facilitate modern treatment options.
