Overview

Poland’s healthcare system continues to undergo significant digital, financial, and structural transformations. To manage a 14 billion PLN budget deficit, the National Health Fund (NFZ) has been shifting payments for services performed beyond established limits to future fiscal years, prioritizing oncology and childbirth. Recent NFZ updates include the abolition of degressive rates for four key oncological diagnostic tests—MRI, CT scans, gastroscopy, and colonoscopy—to ensure full funding for both active treatment and follow-up care. A new lung cancer screening program using low-dose CT scans is scheduled to launch in October for high-risk smokers aged 55–74.

Structural reforms include the NFZ’s plan to centrally monitor schedules for 15 specific hospital procedures starting October 1, integrated into the AP KOLCE application. Regarding sanatorium treatments, patient co-payments for accommodation and meals are set to decrease for the autumn-winter season starting October 1, 2026. For a standard 21-day stay, daily rates for single rooms with full sanitary facilities will be 32.60 PLN, while double rooms will cost 19.50 PLN. However, the Supreme Medical Council remains in strong opposition to the NFZ’s plan to remove the 1.05 corrective coefficient used since February 2020, warning it could reduce funding for pediatric services and specialized adult treatments in mining environments.

Primary Health Care (POZ) reforms will also take effect October 1, 2026, linking clinic funding to quality indicators such as preventive screening rates and the ratio of home visits to teleconsultations. Medical professionals have expressed concern that these indicators are influenced by patient decisions rather than staff performance. Looking toward 2027, the NFZ plans to individualize treatments and include Ankle-Brachial Index (ABI) measurements in guaranteed services.
