Healthcare challenges reported in Calabria hospitals
Healthcare facilities in Calabria are facing significant operational challenges. In Reggio Calabria, a dialysis emergency has emerged following the suspension of services at the Pellaro Dialysis Center. Regional Councilor Giuseppe Falcomatà reported that 36 patients were forced to seek life-saving treatment at the Grande Ospedale Metropolitano, leading to difficult shifts that include overnight sessions. The crisis is attributed to a one-year delay in signing the accreditation documents required for the Pellaro center to continue operations.
Separately, at the Jazzolino Hospital in Vibo Valentia, staff have raised concerns regarding patient transport. Due to the structural layout, patients on stretchers must be moved through an outdoor courtyard to reach the magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) machine located in a basement area. This requirement exposes vulnerable patients, including the elderly and children, to weather conditions such as rain and cold during transit.
