Healthcare infrastructure and technology debates in Southern Italy

Healthcare infrastructure and technological advancement remain central topics in Southern Italy. In Catania, a long-standing project to establish the first proton therapy hub in Southern Italy at the Cannizzaro Hospital has stalled. Despite an estimated 112 million euro investment and the potential to serve 1,600 patients annually, the initiative has faced delays due to failed tenders and administrative changes since 2012.

In Catanzaro, regional leader Enzo Bruno is advocating for a shift in healthcare strategy. Rather than investing in new construction, Bruno argues that the city should focus on upgrading existing facilities like the Germaneto and viale Pio X structures. He emphasizes the need for investments in robotics, artificial intelligence, and informatics to address technological gaps, rather than building more hospitals or specialized pediatric centers.
