Healthcare professionals face rising mental health risks and systemic pressure

Medical professionals face significant psychological challenges, including high rates of chronic exhaustion, sleep disorders, and emotional detachment. Research indicates a notably higher suicide rate among physicians compared to the general population, with female physicians showing a rate up to 5.7 times higher than non-medical women and male physicians up to 3.4 times higher. These issues are driven by high responsibility, time pressure, bureaucracy, and a professional culture that often demands emotional suppression and resilience at the expense of personal well-being.

In response to systemic pressures, the German Medical Association (BÄK) has released a strategy paper emphasizing the need for greater healthcare resilience. The paper proposes that outpatient practices should play a more significant role in supporting hospitals during crises, disasters, or defense scenarios. Additionally, discussions within the sector continue regarding medical specialization, the impact of reimbursement on care, and the need for better protections, such as maternity leave, for self-employed physicians.
