Global healthcare professional burnout and mental health

Healthcare professionals in Europe and the United States are facing significant mental health challenges and systemic pressures. In Germany and Austria, medical professionals report high rates of chronic exhaustion, sleep disorders, and emotional detachment. Research indicates suicide rates among physicians are notably higher than the general population, with female physicians showing a rate up to 5.7 times higher than non-medical women and male physicians up to 3.4 times higher. To address these issues, the German Medical Association (BÄK) has proposed a strategy for greater healthcare resilience, suggesting outpatient practices take a larger role in supporting hospitals during crises.

In the United States, studies show varying trends across different specialties. While pediatrician burnout declined from 46.2 percent in 2021 to 35.2 percent in 2025, a persistent gender gap remains, with more female pediatricians reporting burnout than males. Additionally, approximately 38 percent of inpatient mental health registered nurses in the US experience high burnout, with 22 percent of those surveyed planning to leave their employers within a year. Researchers emphasize that improving staffing and work environment quality is critical to reducing turnover.
