Healthcare providers expand peritoneal dialysis access in Peru and Chile

Healthcare providers in Peru and Chile are implementing or advocating for expanded peritoneal dialysis to improve patient autonomy and reduce hospital strain.

In Arequipa, Peru, the Hospital Honorio Delgado Espinoza has launched a home delivery service for peritoneal dialysis supplies. This initiative aims to reduce travel costs and physical effort for patients with chronic renal failure. The program currently serves approximately 12 patients within the Arequipa province, providing monthly deliveries of dialysis solutions and necessary medical devices.

In the Valparaíso Region of Chile, medical specialists are calling for increased access to peritoneal dialysis to alleviate pressure on the healthcare system. Data presented at the Renal Talks 2026 event indicates that of the nearly 2,780 renal replacement therapies performed in the region, 2,679 are hemodialysis treatments. Experts suggest that shifting more patients toward peritoneal dialysis could optimize resources and improve quality of life by allowing treatment in the home.
