Healthcare providers expand robotic surgical capabilities in US and Canada

Healthcare providers in the United States and Canada are expanding their access to robotic-assisted surgical technologies.

In Hanford, California, Adventist Health has added a second da Vinci Xi surgical system to its main hospital and Ker Outpatient Center. The expansion aims to meet rising demand in the Central Valley, where approximately 60% of general surgery cases are now performed using robotic technology. Surgeons utilize the system for various minimally invasive procedures, including colorectal, urologic, cardiac, and thoracic surgeries, noting that the technology allows for better reach and smaller incisions, which can lead to faster patient recovery times.

In Greater Victoria, Canada, the Victoria Hospitals Foundation completed a $38 million fundraising campaign to equip the Royal Jubilee Hospital and Victoria General Hospital with robotic surgical systems. These facilities now house three robots: two da Vinci systems and a Mazor X neurosurgical robot. This initiative marks the first of its kind on Vancouver Island. Surgical teams in the region have already performed over 800 robotic procedures across seven specialties, including British Columbia’s first robotic-assisted emergency surgery and robotic colectomy.
