Italy healthcare: Regional expansion of community clinics and primary care

Various Italian regions are reporting developments in territorial healthcare and the expansion of community health services.

In Liguria, the 'Case della Comunità' (Community Houses) have seen significant usage, with over 65,000 accesses recorded between January and July 2026. This increase, particularly in the Spezia area, is noted as a way to alleviate pressure on emergency rooms. The region is also experimenting with providing diagnostic tests directly within these centers.

In Bari, the Sant'Anna district will open a new general practitioner clinic on September 1 following an agreement between the Municipality and the local Asl to address physician shortages. Similarly, in the Quarrata-Serravalle area of Tuscany, two new general practitioners are scheduled to begin service on September 1 to ensure continuity of care.

In Bologna, the Ausl has confirmed that the via Beroaldo clinic will remain operational, stating that any future changes to the healthcare network will depend on the impact of the newly implemented unified continuity of care telephone system.
