Healthcare services face crisis in Serra San Bruno and Penne

Regional healthcare facilities in Italy are facing significant operational challenges due to staffing shortages and service restructuring.

In Serra San Bruno, regional councilor Enzo Bruno has called for an urgent plan to address chronic shortages of medical, nursing, technical, and administrative staff. While the hospital's physical infrastructure and technology are considered adequate, the lack of personnel threatens essential services, particularly in the 24-hour emergency room, radiology, and analysis laboratories. Bruno emphasized that healthcare access in internal areas must account for geographic and demographic realities rather than just activity volumes.

Simultaneously, in the Abruzzo region, political leaders Antonio Blasioli and Margherita D’Agostino have criticized recent decisions by the Asl di Pescara regarding the San Massimo hospital in Penne. They contend that the restructuring—which includes the suppression of certain radiology and laboratory functions and the transfer of routine activities to Pescara—reduces the facility's autonomy and effectiveness. Concerns were also raised regarding limited radiology coverage, reportedly restricted to six hours a day with minimal staff.
