Ceuta healthcare professionals demand state of alarm amid sanitary crisis

Healthcare professionals and organizations are warning of a severe sanitary and humanitarian emergency in Ceuta following a massive influx of migrants starting July 30. The General Council of Nursing has formally requested a state of alarm, citing an unprecedented collapse of the healthcare system. Nurses report extreme workloads, with daily assistance peaking at 1,400 people and shifts extending several hours beyond scheduled times.

The crisis has led to the emergence of several health issues linked to overcrowding and poor hygiene, including 200 cases of acute gastroenteritis, 20 cases of scabies, 21 cases of impetigo, and 4 cases of tuberculosis. Professional colleges in Cádiz have also expressed deep concern, demanding an immediate emergency plan to prevent further epidemiological risks.

In addition to the medical strain, Unicef has warned that hundreds of unaccompanied minors are living on the streets in unsafe and unsanitary conditions. In response, the Ministry of Youth and Childhood is preparing a plan to relocate 500 migrant girls to the mainland. NGOs are currently seeking volunteers to assist with medical needs in migrant settlements.
