Spanish regional healthcare emergency surges
Overview
Healthcare services in northern Spain have experienced significant surges in emergency demand during the summer season.
In Cantabria, Primary Care Emergency Services reported an activity increase of over 40%, while hospital emergency departments saw a 24% rise in demand. Health Counselor César Pascual noted that while emergency complexity remains stable, a high volume of low-complexity cases is straining the system, particularly as one-third of staff are on vacation. To mitigate this, summer hiring was used to reinforce services with double shifts.
In Galicia, seasonal surges and resource shortages have led to reports of saturation. In the O Salnés area, local festivities and increased tourism resulted in nearly 1,000 emergencies over a three-day period. Additionally, the CIG union reported that the Complejo Hospitalario Universitario de Santiago faced overwhelming conditions, citing a lack of wheelchairs and stretchers that blocked ambulance access and forced patients to wait in hallways.
