Healthcare shortages reported in Umbria, Italy

The Umbria region in Italy is facing significant healthcare challenges, including critical staffing shortages in gynecology and a lack of palliative care facilities.

In the Usl Umbria 1 health authority, extreme criticality has been reported in the gynecology and obstetrics departments at the Città di Castello and Gubbio-Branca hospitals. Due to medical staff departures and maternity leaves, the health authority has implemented extraordinary measures to hire specialist doctors through freelance collaborations, as previous public recruitment efforts failed to secure immediate availability.

Additionally, there is a growing demand for an hospice facility in Orvieto to support elderly residents and those with incurable illnesses. Currently, the region only has three hospices in Perugia, Spoleto, and Terni, providing 26 beds in total. This falls significantly short of the national standard, which suggests 8 to 10 beds per 100,000 inhabitants. Regional officials have stated a goal to reach 90% coverage for palliative care by 2028.
