Healthcare transparency initiatives launched in Hungary and Romania

New initiatives are being implemented in Hungary and Romania to increase transparency regarding hospital-acquired infections.

In Hungary, the National Public Health and Pharmaceutical Center is launching an interactive online platform to make infection statistics from healthcare institutions publicly available. This initiative follows a commitment by Health Minister Zsolt Hegedűs to release the data by September. National Chief Medical Officer Beatrix Oroszi stated that the primary goal is to enhance patient safety and care quality rather than ranking institutions. The data will track categories such as ventilator-associated pneumonia, urinary tract infections from catheterization, bloodstream infections from venous catheters, and Clostridioides difficile infections. Experts note that while infections do not always imply professional negligence, proper infection control could prevent 20% to 30% of cases.

In Romania, recent data from the National Institute of Public Health shows varying trends in nosocomial infections. In Satu Mare County, cases decreased to 130 in the first three months of the year compared to 153 during the same period last year. However, on a national level, cases rose from 11,961 in the first quarter of 2025 to 12,415 in the first quarter of the current year. The highest numbers were recorded in Bucharest, Iași, and Cluj, which officials attribute to high patient volumes and advanced screening capacities in these major university centers.
