Healthcare infection transparency in Hungary and Romania
Overview
Hungary is implementing a new initiative to increase transparency regarding healthcare-associated infections in hospitals. Health Minister Zsolt Hegedűs announced the launch of the National Nosocomial Surveillance System (NNSR) database, managed by the National Public Health and Medical Officer Service (NNGYK). Scheduled to become publicly available in September, the interactive online platform will provide institutional data on various infection categories, such as ventilator-associated pneumonia and bloodstream infections.
National Chief Medical Officer Beatrix Oroszi emphasized that the goal is to enhance patient safety and care quality rather than to rank institutions, noting that infection rates are influenced by patient case-mix and care complexity.
In a related regional context, Romania has reported varying trends in nosocomial infections. While cases in Satu Mare County decreased compared to the previous year, national figures rose from 11,961 in the first quarter of 2025 to 12,415 in the first quarter of the current year. High infection numbers in Bucharest, Iași, and Cluj have been attributed by officials to high patient volumes and advanced screening capacities.
