Healthcare infection transparency in Hungary and Romania

Overview

Hungary has launched an interactive online platform to increase transparency regarding healthcare-associated infections. Managed by the National Public Health and Pharmaceutical Center (NNGYK), the dashboard provides data spanning from 2021 to 2025, covering hospital outbreaks, multi-resistant pathogens, Clostridioides difficile, and bloodstream infections.

The NNGYK stated the initiative aims to facilitate “professional feedback, institutional self-assessment, and the strengthening of patient safety.” This move follows a May government decision to mandate the disclosure of previously withheld datasets. Beatrix Oroszi, the national chief medical officer, clarified that the goal is not to rank institutions but to encourage improvements, noting that the economic burden of managing these infections is estimated to reach hundreds of billions of Hungarian forints annually.

While the platform provides charts and indicators for public and professional use, hospital leaders cautioned that direct comparisons between institutions can be misleading due to variables like patient age, underlying health conditions, and microbiological testing frequency. Critics have also noted that the current data structure may not yet be sufficient for patients to choose safer facilities, expressing concerns that official statistics may not fully capture all deaths linked to antibiotic-resistant bacteria or that data may primarily reflect areas with high testing volumes.

In Romania, national nosocomial infection figures rose from 11,961 in the first quarter of 2025 to 12,415 in the first quarter of the current year. While cases in Satu Mare County decreased to 130 during the same period, high infection numbers persist in Bucharest, Iași, and Cluj. Officials attribute these higher counts to advanced screening capacities and high patient volumes in these major university centers.
