Hearing loss rises among youth and adults, linked to headphone use and sedentary habits

Health experts warn that permanent hearing loss is increasingly affecting adolescents and young adults, largely due to prolonged use of headphones and exposure to loud sounds. Audióloga Valerie Pavlovich Ruff of the Cleveland Clinic emphasized that once the delicate hair cells in the inner ear are damaged they do not regenerate, making early prevention crucial. Cases of early‑onset loss have been reported in children as young as six, highlighting the growing public‑health concern.

A separate international study involving researchers from Spain, Chile and the United States found that adults with hearing loss are significantly more likely to spend extended periods in sedentary behavior. Analyzing data from over 3,500 Chilean participants aged 40 and older, the researchers reported an 81 % higher odds of sitting more than eight hours a day among those with hearing impairment. The findings suggest that hearing loss could serve as a marker for prolonged inactivity, offering a potential entry point for integrated health interventions.

Both pieces of research underscore the broader implications of auditory health for overall well‑being and point to the need for greater awareness and preventive measures across age groups.
