Heart Aerospace X1 completes first flight of world's largest electric aircraft

Heart Aerospace has successfully completed the maiden flight of its X1 demonstrator, which is recognized as the largest battery-electric aircraft to have ever flown. The test flight took place on August 12, 2026, at Plattsburgh International Airport in New York, under a special experimental airworthiness certificate from the FAA.

The 27-minute mission involved taxiing, takeoff, climbing, maneuvering, and landing. During the flight, the aircraft reached an altitude of 1,100 feet (335 meters) and utilized a propulsion system delivering over one megawatt of power. Notably, the company reported that the electricity consumed during the entire flight cost approximately five dollars.

The X1 serves as a full-scale technology demonstrator to validate aerodynamics, electrical systems, and flight controls for the company’s upcoming ES-30 regional aircraft. Unlike the X1, the ES-30 will be a 30-seat hybrid-electric aircraft. While the X1 is purely electric, the ES-30 will utilize an independent hybrid architecture combining electric motors with conventional turboprop engines. Heart Aerospace has secured significant orders for the ES-30, including commitments from United Airlines, Mesa Air Group, and Air Canada, though the certification target for the ES-30 has been adjusted to 2031.
