Heat pumps show high efficiency in UK residential heating
Ground source heat pumps are gaining traction in the United Kingdom as a sustainable alternative to fossil fuel heating. These systems utilize underground pipes filled with water and antifreeze to absorb natural heat from the Earth, providing efficient heating, cooling, and hot water for residential and commercial buildings.
While initial installation costs can be higher than traditional systems, ground source heat pumps offer high efficiency, often generating up to three units of heat for every unit of electricity used. They also feature low maintenance requirements and a lifespan of up to 25 years.
A case study of an 18th-century sandstone home in the UK demonstrated the effectiveness of heat pump technology in older properties. After replacing an oil-based heating system, the homeowner reported a measured efficiency of approximately 520%. The transition resulted in steadier indoor temperatures, reduced relative humidity, and lower annual heating costs, dropping from roughly £1,200–£1,500 for oil to approximately £836 for electricity.
