Heat warnings and severe storms sweep Latvia and parts of the US Midwest

The Latvian Environment, Geology and Meteorology Centre forecast tropical night temperatures above 20 °C and daytime highs up to 32 °C, with a high UV index and thunderstorms expected later in the week.

In the United States, a severe thunderstorm watch covers western Nebraska, where hail up to 1 inch and wind gusts up to 80 mph are possible. Similar severe weather alerts cite damaging wind and large hail risks.

Further east, extreme heat warnings were issued for east‑central Minnesota and northwest Wisconsin, with temperatures reaching 88 °F, humidity driving heat‑index values above 100 °F, and heat advisories extending into surrounding areas.

All three regions face heightened public‑safety concerns, prompting recommendations to stay hydrated, seek shelter, and avoid outdoor exposure during peak heat or storm periods.
