US severe weather persists, Fausto weakens near Hawaii
Overview
The multi‑day severe‑weather pattern that began on July 24‑25 remains active across the United States. In addition to ongoing heat warnings in the Upper Midwest and severe‑thunderstorm watches in the South, isolated thunderstorms are expected Friday across Colorado’s Front Range, with damaging outflow winds up to 60 mph, hail and low‑90 °F temperatures. A flash‑flood warning has been issued for the Aspen Acres Burn Scar area of southeastern Colorado after 0.2‑0.5 inches of rain triggered life‑threatening flooding and debris flows.
Over the Pacific, Tropical Storm Fausto has further weakened to a post‑tropical remnant low with 60‑65 mph winds and a central pressure near 1,000 mb. Positioned 265‑400 mi northeast/east of Hilo and Honolulu, it is moving west‑northwest at 14‑15 mph. A high‑surf warning and subsequent advisory cover east‑facing shores of Oahu, Maui, Kauai and the Big Island, with surf heights of 8‑12 ft, powerful rip currents and beach closures in the Keaukaha area of Hilo. Forecasts call for Fausto to become a tropical depression by Thursday and eventually dissipate.
Hurricane Genevieve, now a Category 3 system with 125 mph winds, sits about 530 mi southwest of Baja California, generating large swells that are producing dangerous surf and rip currents along the coasts of Baja and southwestern Mexico. Both cyclones are expected to move farther from land, allowing surf conditions to improve.

Claims
What the coverage asserts, and how many sources carry each claim.
Coverage disagrees
Sources make claims that cannot both be true. CLSTR reports the disagreement; it does not decide who is right.
-
"At the time of reporting, Fausto was located approximately 1,200–1,400 miles east of Hilo, Hawaiʻi, moving west at about 14 mph."
vs
"Fausto was located roughly 265‑400 miles northeast/east of Hilo and Honolulu, moving west‑northwest at 14‑15 mph on July 28‑29."
One claim places Fausto 1,200–1,400 mi east of Hilo, while the other places it only 265–400 mi east/northeast of Hilo on the same dates, which cannot both be true.
-
"A high‑surf warning and later a high‑surf advisory were issued for east‑facing Hawaiian shores with surf of 8‑12 feet and dangerous rip currents."
vs
"Hawaiian authorities and Maui County have urged residents to review preparedness plans, though no watches or warnings are currently in effect."
The Hawaiian officials’ statement says no watches or warnings are currently in effect, yet a high‑surf warning and advisory were issued for the same Hawaiian shores, which are warnings.
