Romania under heatwave and storm warnings as temperatures soar

The National Meteorological Administration (ANM) issued multiple Code Yellow alerts for a severe heatwave and atmospheric instability across Romania from 15 July to 18 July. The temperature‑humidity index (ITU) is expected to exceed the critical value of 80, with maximum temperatures reaching 35‑37 °C in regions such as Crișana, Banat, the western and southern parts of Oltenia, and the southern half of Muntenia. Nighttime temperatures will remain tropical, with minima around 20‑22 °C.

Simultaneously, the agency warned of intense thunderstorms in mountainous and sub‑mountainous zones—including Maramureș, the Transylvanian foothills, Oltenia and Muntenia—bringing short‑duration rainfalls of 15‑40 l/m², wind gusts of 50‑70 km/h, isolated hail (1‑3 cm) and occasional whirlwinds. The capital Bucharest, Constanța, Brașov and several counties (Timiș, Arad, Bihor, Satu Mare) are specifically cited.

A separate Code Yellow flood alert was issued for rivers in five basins (Arieș, Olt, Olteț, Argeș, Dâmbovița) affecting counties including Alba, Cluj, Sibiu, Vâlcea, Gorj and Argeș, with possible rapid water level rises.

Authorities advise residents to avoid outdoor activities during peak heat, stay hydrated, seek shelter during thunderstorms, secure property, and follow updates from ANM and local emergency services.
