Heat wave disrupts rail services in Slovakia and the Czech Republic

A prolonged heat wave in Central Europe has pushed temperatures above 39 °C in western Slovakia, prompting a super‑tropical night in Malacky where temperatures stayed above 25 °C. The Slovak Hydrometeorological Institute issued health warnings, advised reduced outdoor activity, and the national railway reduced train speeds in the hottest zones.

In neighbouring Czechia, record‑breaking summer heat caused air‑conditioning failures on the CityElefant electric commuter units. Eleven trains were taken out of service, leaving only a single unit on several Prague‑area lines and halving capacity during peak periods. Repairs are under way, but commuters are warned of crowding until the units return to operation.
