Netherlands endures intense heatwave as temperatures rise above 30 °C

A code‑yellow heat alert has been issued for the Netherlands as temperatures climb past 30 °C, with some areas reaching the high 30s. Experts advise keeping windows and doors shut during the hottest part of the day, using external shading such as blinds, roll‑up screens or pergolas, and ventilating homes in the early morning or late evening when it is cooler. Simple measures like closing curtains, limiting the use of heat‑generating appliances and opening attic vents can also help keep indoor spaces comfortable.

Public events are adapting to the heat. Organisers of the Zomerfeesten Hengevelde are providing coolers, extra shade, water stations and sunscreen, and have cancelled certain activities such as a children’s bouncing castle. The national Heat Plan, activated by the government and RIVM, aims to prevent dehydration and heat‑related illness, especially among vulnerable groups, and to prepare for increased wildfire risk.

Retailer Action is promoting affordable cooling devices, including a mobile air‑conditioner, bladeless fan and a ceiling lamp with integrated fan, priced between €30 and €300. Cyclists using e‑bikes are advised to choose shaded routes, stay hydrated with cold drinks, wear light clothing and sunscreen, and pause regularly in the shade to avoid overheating.
