Romania is facing severe weather extremes, characterized by a persistent heatwave and simultaneous flood risks. The National Meteorological Administration (ANM) has issued multiple warnings across the country. Heatwaves are affecting regions such as Banat, Crișana, Oltenia, and Muntenia, with temperatures reaching up to 39°C and the heat-humidity index (ITU) exceeding 80, creating significant thermal discomfort and tropical nights.

Simultaneously, the National Institute of Hydrology and Water Management (INHGA) has issued yellow code flood warnings for 28 counties. Major river basins, including the Vișeu, Someș, Criș, Mureș, and Jiu, are at risk of rapid runoff, flash floods, and rising water levels. In some areas, such as Alba and Maramureș, red code warnings have been issued for torrential rain and thunderstorms.

The combination of extreme heat and sudden torrential rain is exacerbating a severe drought. Specialists note that summer rains are often too localized and rapid to effectively recharge the dry soil or groundwater levels. This drought has already led to water supply restrictions in 133 settlements across 14 counties, with Botoșani County being heavily affected.
