Romania issues widespread yellow alerts for heat, storms and floods

The National Meteorological Administration (ANM) issued a series of yellow weather alerts for Romania covering the period 7‑8 August 2026. A heat‑wave warning predicts temperatures up to 37 °C and a temperature‑humidity index above the critical 80‑unit threshold across many counties, including Galaţi, Bihor, Timiș and others. A simultaneous storm warning forecasts strong gusts of 50‑90 km/h, hail, heavy rain and the risk of flash floods, with local runoff expected on rivers such as the Vişeu, Someş, Crişul and Timiș.

Hydrological authorities also released a yellow alert for rapid runoff and possible local flooding on rivers in 28 Romanian counties, citing the potential for rapid water level rises and overflow of attention levels. In neighbouring Moldova, the meteorological service issued comparable yellow alerts for intense heat, strong winds and thunderstorms affecting districts such as Iași, Vaslui, Galaţi and Botoșani. The coordinated alerts aim to protect public health, reduce infrastructure damage and guide emergency services across the region.
