Scorching Temperatures in Diyarbakır Spur Surge in Watermelon and Melon Purchases

Extreme heat persisting in southeastern Turkey has pushed daily life in Diyarbakır to seek relief in fresh fruit. With daytime temperatures repeatedly topping 40 °C, residents have abandoned heavy meals for watermelon and melon, driving a sharp rise in demand at the Barış Caddesi market where the locally renowned Çınar varieties are sold at budget‑friendly prices.

Dr Ahmet Yıldırım, a climatology specialist, notes that such July temperatures are typical for Diyarbakır’s semi‑arid climate, though nightly lows have been climbing in recent years. He cautions that a full assessment of any long‑term warming trend will require data through the end of the season, but current figures remain within historical ranges.
