Heatwave expected in Slovakia as El Niño intensifies

A new wave of extreme heat is forecast to hit Slovakia starting Monday, driven by a rapidly strengthening El Niño that is expected to peak between July and September. The World Meteorological Organization warned that the phenomenon could raise surface ocean temperatures and trigger significant temperature anomalies across central Europe. Meteorologists predict daytime highs to exceed the 30 °C threshold, with some regions possibly reaching 35 °C. Weather expert Jörg Kachelmann described the monthly forecasts as “dosť katastrofálne” (quite catastrophic). In response, Slovak rail operator ZSSK is preparing climate‑controlled trains and enhancing maintenance to mitigate service disruptions.

Authorities are urging heightened vigilance, especially for sectors sensitive to heat such as agriculture and health, and are activating early‑warning systems to help the public and businesses prepare for the upcoming heatwave.
