Heatwave response in Ireland and UK mobilises fire crews and wildlife charity

In the Irish coastal town of Kinsale, firefighters used their hoses to water public plants and flowers as a preventative measure against drying vegetation and potential wildfires during an intense heat spell. The Kinsale Tidy Towns group thanked the brigade for "coming to our rescue in this very hot weather" and highlighted the dual benefit of keeping the town green while reducing fire risk.

Meanwhile, the Northumberland Wildlife Trust in northern England issued guidance for the public to assist local wildlife during the same period of soaring temperatures. The charity urged residents to provide water sources such as bird baths, shallow dishes, and sugary solutions, and to offer supplemental food for birds, hedgehogs, frogs and insects. It also advised placing feeders in shade, keeping dead wood damp, and avoiding disturbance of habitats that are vulnerable to heat stress and fire.

Both initiatives reflect community‑level actions taken across Ireland and the United Kingdom to mitigate the impacts of an ongoing heatwave on plants, wildlife and fire safety.
