Heatwave threatens western Terai region of Nepal with temperatures up to 41 °C

The Department of Hydrology and Meteorology (DHM) has issued heat‑wave alerts for Nepal’s western Terai, Lumbini and Sudurpaschim provinces. Forecasts call for temperatures as high as 41 °C in Nepalgunj and 38‑40 °C in Dhangadhi, with other towns in the Terai expected to remain above 35 °C.

Authorities warn that the extreme heat poses risks to public health, especially for children, the elderly and people with chronic illnesses. Residents are advised to stay hydrated, wear light cotton clothing, avoid unnecessary outdoor activities in the afternoon, and follow official weather advisories. Light to moderate rain with thunder and lightning is possible in the hilly and mountainous areas of Koshi, Bagmati and Gandaki provinces, as well as the Kathmandu Valley.
