India weather: Heavy rain and flood alerts issued across multiple states
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued widespread heavy rain alerts across much of the country as the monsoon enters an active phase. Significant warnings have been issued for Delhi-NCR, Haryana, Punjab, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Madhya Pradesh, and Bihar.
A low-pressure area situated over north-western Madhya Pradesh and south-western Uttar Pradesh is expected to move east-north-east over the coming days, driving intense precipitation. In the Delhi-NCR region, yellow alerts are in effect for Noida, Gurugram, Ghaziabad, and Faridabad.
In Uttarakhand, authorities in Rudraprayag are on high alert as the Alaknanda and Mandakini rivers approach warning levels, raising concerns of flash floods in low-lying areas. Madhya Pradesh faces heavy rain warnings across 19 districts, including orange alerts for several areas.
In the eastern and northeastern regions, including Bihar, West Bengal, Sikkim, Assam, and Meghalaya, heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, and lightning are expected. The weather system is also expected to bring risks of landslides in hilly terrains and potential flooding in the Ganges plains due to rising river levels.
