Heavy monsoon rains trigger floods and fatalities across multiple Indian states
Heavy rainfall and extreme weather conditions are impacting multiple regions across India due to a low-pressure area over the Bay of Bengal. In Gujarat, approximately 40 people, including children, were trapped by sudden rising waters near the Indreshwar Temple in the Junagadh-Girnar forest area, though all were eventually rescued.
In Kerala, flash flooding of the Kottappuzha River has resulted in at least one death, with several others feared swept away. Landslides in Idukki have also caused fatalities. Other regions facing severe impacts include Madhya Pradesh, where seven people died after a car was swept away by a flooded stream, and Bihar, where 15 districts are affected by flooding.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued various alerts, including an ‘orange alert’ for Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Kerala, and Andhra Pradesh. In Telangana, heavy to very heavy rainfall is expected through September 24 in several districts, including Mancherial, Karimnagar, and Warangal, accompanied by thunderstorms and high winds.
