Monsoon flooding and extreme weather in India
Overview
Heavy monsoon rains and a low-pressure system over the Bay of Bengal have triggered widespread flooding, landslides, and fatalities across several Indian states.
Initial reports indicated severe weather impacts in Gujarat, where rising waters trapped approximately 40 people near the Indreshwar Temple, and in Kerala, where flash flooding and landslides caused deaths. Other regions, including Madhya Pradesh and Bihar, also reported significant flooding and casualties. The India Meteorological Department issued alerts for several southern and central states, including Tamil Nadu and Telangana.
In Odisha, the situation has escalated as severe flooding and a deep depression caused widespread devastation. The state government has evacuated over 70,000 people into 395 relief camps across 13 districts, including Balasore, Bhadrak, Mayurbhanj, and Jajpur. In Balasore, the Subarnarekha and Budhabalanga rivers have flowed above danger levels, a situation exacerbated by water released from the Galudih barrage in Jharkhand.
In Mayurbhanj, a breach in the Gangahar River embankment near Kunchibania village has submerged agricultural land and trapped residents. Fatalities have been confirmed in Kendujhar, Mayurbhanj, and Ganjam due to collapsed walls, and four people remain missing near the Baitarani River. Rescue operations are being led by the Odisha Disaster Rapid Action Force (ODRAF), the NDRF, and fire services. Additionally, rising water levels have forced the temporary closure of tourist sites such as Devkund in Similipal National Park.
