Heavy Rain and Thunderstorms Sweep Northern India

The India Meteorological Department warned of a fresh spell of rain and thunderstorms across Jammu and Kashmir from July 9‑12, with isolated heavy downpours expected. Authorities highlighted the risk of flash floods, landslides, mudslides and waterlogging in hilly and low‑lying areas, urging residents, tourists and commuters to stay vigilant.

In the Delhi‑NCR region, a yellow alert was extended for five days as heavy rain continued to cause widespread waterlogging, uprooted trees and severe traffic congestion on major roads. Meteorologists attributed the rains to a western disturbance over northern Pakistan, a low‑pressure system over central Madhya Pradesh and moisture‑laden monsoon winds from the Arabian Sea. The Centre noted that India's monsoon deficit has narrowed to 12% despite the recent heavy showers.

Both regions have been advised to follow official weather advisories and avoid non‑essential travel in vulnerable zones.
