Kerala floods kill eight, displace thousands to relief camps
Intense monsoon rains on August 1‑2 2026 triggered landslides and flash floods across Kerala’s hilly districts. Eight people died, including three children, 13 were injured and eight remained missing. The deaths were caused by landslides, drowning in swollen streams and a water‑logged construction pit.
Chief Minister V D Satheesan ordered a large‑scale relief effort. More than 5,700 residents were shifted to 209 relief camps, while later reports noted 65 camps sheltering about 1,465 people. The state recorded 27 houses completely destroyed and 196 partially damaged. The India Meteorological Department issued red alerts for nine districts and orange alerts for twelve, warning of up to 320 mm of rainfall in parts of Kannur (Ayyankunnu) and other areas. The Kerala State Disaster Management Authority coordinated the response, and the Revenue Minister A P Anilkumar oversaw district‑level operations.
