North Africa weather: Heavy rainfall and flood alerts in Tunisia and Algeria

Heavy rainfall has been recorded across multiple regions in Tunisia and Algeria, prompting meteorological warnings and emergency responses.

In Tunisia, the National Institute of Meteorology reported that 16 out of 24 governorates experienced precipitation over a 24-hour period. Sfax recorded the highest amounts, with up to 62 mm in Ramla. Other significant rainfall was noted in Kasserine, Siliana, Gafsa, Sidi Bouzid, and Monastir.

In Algeria, the National Meteorological Office issued several orange alerts for various regions. Southern wilayas, including Timimoun, In Salah, Tamanrasset, Djanet, and Illizi, were placed under vigilance for rainfall between 20 and 30 mm. Other areas such as El Bayadh, Laghouat, and Ghardaïa face potential accumulations of up to 40 mm. Following recent torrential rains, civil protection services reported a fatality in Tébessa, where a man was swept away by floodwaters, though five others were rescued from a submerged vehicle.
