Corral, Chile battered by floods and landslides after atmospheric river brings heavy rain

An intense frontal system reinforced by a Category 3‑4 atmospheric river struck southern Chile on 7 July, delivering up to 110 mm of rain in the coastal commune of Corral (Los Ríos Region). The deluge caused landslides that destroyed homes, storage sheds and vehicles, inundated streets and cut off the only road access to the town. Power outages affected more than 20 000 customers nationwide, with the hardest impacts in Los Ríos, La Araucanía and Los Lagos.

Mayor Claudio González described the situation as grave and warned of further deterioration as more rain is forecast. Local authorities deployed municipal crews and heavy machinery to clear debris, while the Chilean police intervened in a kindergarten to prevent flooding. No injuries have been reported so far.

Senator Iván Flores and municipal leaders have asked the national government to declare a disaster zone for Corral and nearby coastal communes, arguing that the current red‑alert mechanisms are insufficient to mobilise the needed resources. An emergency shelter was opened for displaced families, though many residents remain with relatives. The community continues to grapple with flooded homes, blocked roads and the threat of additional landslides.
