Heavy rains flood Mexico City’s Chamber of Deputies basement

Intense rainstorms on Wednesday overwhelmed the storm‑drain system around the Palacio Legislativo de San Lázaro in Mexico City. Water backed up through the building’s ramps and basement drainage grates, flooding the lower level of the Chamber of Deputies. The flooding soaked dozens of boxes, wooden furniture and other stored items, but no injuries were reported and no major structural damage was identified.

Legislative officials have submitted a request to the Venustiano Carranza borough to clear the main drainage line that feeds the surrounding streets, citing a level difference between the building’s foundation and the city’s primary sewer network as the cause. Maintenance crews and civil protection personnel worked to pump out the water and monitor the site while the city continues to experience heavy precipitation that is also affecting streets and traffic throughout the capital.
