Uttarakhand heavy rains halt Char Dham pilgrimage, bridge collapse
Continuous heavy rainfall across Uttarakhand triggered landslides in Chamoli, Tehri, Uttarkashi and Rudraprayag and pushed the Alaknanda and Mandakini rivers above warning levels. The state administration placed districts on high alert and suspended the Char Dham Yatra for two days, closing the Badrinath and Kedarnath highways at Bhanerpani and Munkatiya due to debris and rockfalls. Road‑clearing operations with heavy machinery are underway and officials are monitoring the situation from a Yatra control room.
On the Dehradun‑Paonta Sahib highway, the newly built approach road to the Nanda Ki Chowki bridge caved in within 16 days of opening after torrential rain washed away the underlying soil. The bridge structure itself remained intact. The repaired bridge and its approach were constructed at a cost of Rs 16 crore. The collapse prompted political accusations from Uttarakhand Congress leaders, who alleged corruption and demanded the dismissal of Public Works Department Minister Satpal Maharaj.
