Char Dham Yatra sees record crowds amid monsoon flooding

Overview

The 2026 Char Dham Yatra continues to see record-breaking attendance despite severe monsoon disruptions. By the 125th day of the season, over 4.8 million pilgrims had visited the four shrines, an increase of 522,634 devotees compared to the same period last year. Yamunotri specifically set a new record with more than 668,000 visitors.

Heavy rainfall has caused significant logistical and safety challenges across Uttarakhand. In Rudraprayag, rising river levels, including the Punan Gadhera, prompted authorities to issue alerts and prohibit trekking on certain routes. Landslides have severely impacted transportation, blocking National Highway 5 in Nigalusri and closing the Badrinath National Highway and the Narayanbagh–Karnprayag main road due to debris in Helang. While crews work to clear roads, ongoing rain and rock-fall risks persist.

Beyond Uttarakhand, the monsoon has caused widespread disruption across South Asia. The India Meteorological Department issued alerts for 16 states, with heavy rainfall and high winds reported in regions including Delhi-NCR, Madhya Pradesh, and Assam. In Nepal, authorities have forecasted heavy rain in mountainous and hilly regions, raising risks of floods and debris flows.

Despite these hazards, Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami stated the pilgrimage is continuing smoothly. Disaster Management Departments in Rudraprayag, Chamoli, and Uttarkashi remain on constant alert, with officials regulating travel during periods of deteriorating weather to ensure devotee security.
