Heavy Rainstorms Damage Communities in Chiapas, Mexico

Intense rainstorms across the Costa region of Chiapas on July 11‑12, 2026 caused significant material damage in the municipalities of Pijijiapan and Tapachula. In Pijijiapan, strong winds toppled large trees onto streets and parked vehicles, blocking thoroughfares and damaging property, while flood‑water accumulation hindered mobility. Authorities and emergency crews were dispatched to clear the debris and restore traffic.

In Tapachula, a brief but violent tornado‑like storm produced wind gusts that ripped roof panels, displaced sheets of metal and damaged light structures. Local emergency services cordoned off affected areas and inspected buildings to prevent further incidents. No injuries were reported in either location. The National Civil Protection Coordination and the National Meteorological Service warned that the region remains vulnerable to additional heavy rainfall, floods, landslides and river overflows, urging residents to avoid crossing streams, stay away from unstable trees and report fallen cables or debris.

Both municipalities have called for reinforced preventive measures, including tree maintenance and drainage cleaning, to mitigate future weather‑related risks.
