Heavy transport decarbonization: Electric trucks approach cost parity

The heavy transport sector is approaching a technological shift as electric trucks move toward cost parity with diesel models. According to a Carbon Tracker study, the total cost of ownership (TCO) for electric trucks is expected to equal that of diesel equivalents in major global markets by the early 2030s.

The International Energy Agency (IEA) notes that while the initial purchase price of heavy electric trucks remains two to three times higher than diesel, their efficiency is a major factor. Electric heavy trucks consume roughly 55% less energy than diesel counterparts, and the IEA estimates TCO parity for long-distance electric trucks in Europe will occur around 2030.

In the current Spanish market, Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil (HVO) is presented as a practical immediate solution. An IRU report suggests that latest-generation diesel engines using HVO can drastically reduce CO2 emissions with a lower TCO than other alternatives, while utilizing existing vehicle fleets and infrastructure.
