Heavy transport faces rising diesel costs and energy transition debates
The heavy transport sector in Europe is facing a dual challenge of rising operational costs and a complex energy transition. In Spain, diesel prices have increased by more than 30% year-on-year, reaching approximately 1.88 euros per liter. This rise is attributed to refining capacity constraints rather than just crude oil prices. With a tax reduction set to expire in late September, prices in Spain could rise by an additional 24 cents per liter in October.
Amidst these economic pressures, the debate over decarbonization continues. Martin Lundstedt, CEO of Volvo Group, has warned that relying exclusively on battery-electric trucks would be a “dangerous” strategic error. He argues that while electric vehicles suit regional delivery, long-distance transport requires a multi-technology approach. Lundstedt advocates for the inclusion of hydrogen fuel cells to maintain high payload capacities and reduce refueling times, ensuring operational efficiency is not compromised during the transition.
