Hedgehog behavior and health factors
Hedgehog behavior, including apparent laziness or unusual sleeping postures, is often influenced by environmental factors, diet, age, and health. Because hedgehogs are nocturnal, their daytime sleep can be mistaken for lethargy.
Temperature plays a critical role in hedgehog activity. If temperatures drop below 15-18°C (59-64°F), hedgehogs may instinctively attempt to enter hibernation, a physiological state that significantly reduces metabolic and heart rates. Conversely, temperatures above 29°C (85°F) can cause lethargy due to overheating.
Regarding physical posture, hedgehogs may lie on their sides while sleeping, which can be a normal, relaxed position. However, owners should monitor for accompanying symptoms to differentiate between normal resting and potential underlying health issues.
