Overview

Socially, hedgehogs are solitary animals. Cohabitation is discouraged because it can lead to dominance hierarchies, resource guarding, weakened immune systems, and risks of aggression, stress, or injury.

Temperature is a critical factor for behavioral health. For African pygmy hedgehogs, the ideal range is 22°C to 27°C (72°F to 80°F). Temperatures below 15-18°C (59-64°F) may trigger instinctive hibernation or torpor, which can be fatal if prolonged. Conversely, temperatures exceeding 29°C (85°F) can cause lethargy due to overheating.

Behavioral observations, such as unusual sleeping postures or apparent laziness, must be interpreted carefully. Because hedgehogs are nocturnal, daytime sleep may be mistaken for lethargy, and sleeping on their sides can be a normal, relaxed position. Owners are advised to monitor for accompanying symptoms to differentiate between normal resting and underlying health issues. In the wild, species like Erinaceus europaeus follow seasonal patterns, typically emerging from winter hibernation between March and April.
