Hedgehog care and seasonal activity patterns

Hedgehogs require specific environmental management to maintain health, particularly regarding temperature and seasonal activity. For African pygmy hedgehogs, the ideal temperature range is between 72°F and 80°F (22°C to 27°C). If temperatures drop below 65°F (18°C), hedgehogs risk entering torpor, a state that can be fatal if prolonged.

In the wild, species such as Erinaceus europaeus follow seasonal activity patterns dictated by temperature and food availability. They are most active during the warmer months from spring to late autumn. Following winter hibernation, hedgehogs typically emerge in the spring, often between March and April.
