HEDEF (DEDDIE) installs over 2 million smart electricity meters in Greece
The Hellenic Electricity Distribution Network Operator (DEDDIE) has surpassed 2 million smart meter installations as part of a nationwide digital transformation aimed at completing the transition to remote telemetry by 2030. Currently, approximately 6,000 new meters are being installed daily—roughly ten per minute—totaling about 130,000 per month.
This shift allows 66% of the country's electricity consumption to be monitored remotely, reducing the need for manual readings and enabling more accurate consumption data. The infrastructure supports new pricing models, such as dynamic 'orange' tariffs that vary based on the time of use.
Beyond meters, DEDDIE is digitally mapping the low-voltage network, covering 50% of customers, and plans to install 50,000 monitoring units at substations. These advancements, combined with artificial intelligence, aim to improve fault detection, manage overloads, and combat electricity theft. CEO Anastasios Manos noted that the annual cost of electricity theft has already decreased from 350 million euros in 2023 to under 300 million euros.
